After a spell of frosty temperatures and brisk winds, much of the UK is poised for a welcome change.

According to meteorologists at Netweather and WX Charts, warmer air is sweeping in just in time to lift the national mood, with a “mini-heatwave” on the cards.

A Sudden Turn to Summer After a Chilly Start

Britons can finally put away their winter coats, as forecasts reveal an incoming surge of warmth.

After recent frosts and Arctic blasts, the UK is on track to experience a burst of summer-like weather, with temperatures leaping from single digits into the low-to-mid 20s Celsius.

Forecasters Point to 24°C Highs in London and Manchester

Weather platform Netweather predicts a striking high of 24°C hitting on May 17, particularly across London and the Manchester region. If this comes to pass, it would mark one of the warmest days of the year so far.

The unusually warm conditions are expected to offer a taste of summer and could drive a surge in outdoor activity, from picnics in parks to beer garden gatherings.

England and Wales to Bask in 20°C+ Heat

It’s not just the major cities getting the warm treatment. Widespread temperatures of over 20°C are forecast across England and Wales, with southern and central areas set to feel especially toasty.

This comes as a welcome break after weeks of unpredictable, often dreary weather. Many regions will likely see several consecutive days of mild, dry conditions.

Competing Forecasts: WX Charts Predicts Slightly Cooler Conditions

While Netweather remains bullish about the heat, WX Charts offers a slightly tempered forecast.

Their model expects a peak of 22°C, still warm, but more localized, particularly in the South East and West Midlands.

Their maps suggest temperatures may hover between 19–21°C in most areas, with cooler air lingering along coastal and western regions.

Scotland and Northern Ireland Join the Warm-Up

Even the typically cooler corners of the UK aren’t being left out. Northern Scotland could see highs of around 19°C, especially near Inverness,

while Northern Ireland is forecast to top out in the mid-teens.

While not quite heatwave territory, these readings are a marked improvement over the recent icy snaps that brought sub-zero lows and wintry showers.

Thursday’s Forecast Kicks Off the Transition

The Met Office’s five-day forecast set the tone for what’s coming.

Thursday saw a mostly dry day with spells of sunshine, especially in central and western areas.

While it remained breezy in the southeast, the overall feel was warmer and more settled, offering an early preview of the incoming spring-to-summer shift.

Sunshine Dominates, But Thunder Looms

The weekend forecast is promising, with Friday and Saturday looking bright and dry for most. However, from Sunday onwards, cloud cover will increase and showers could begin to develop.

By Monday, parts of the country may see thundery outbreaks, particularly in central and southern areas. The heat may not go quietly.

A 54-Hour Heat Spike to Hit 11 Cities

WX Charts highlights a notable weather event: a concentrated “heat bomb” bringing 22°C conditions to 11 UK cities over a 54-hour window.

This intense but brief surge is expected to be most pronounced in urban areas, offering residents a rare mid-spring treat, albeit a short-lived one before more changeable weather returns.

A Dramatic Temperature Swing

Just days ago, forecasts warned of lows of -1°C as far south as Dorset, and even -2°C in some inland areas.

The rapid rise from freezing to sunbathing weather underscores the UK’s notorious climate volatility.

It’s a classic case of “four seasons in a week,” reminding Brits to keep both sun cream and scarves at the ready.

Get Ready for Flip-Flop Season

As we edge closer to summer, now is the time to prepare: dust off the garden furniture, dig out your shorts, and check your sun cream supplies.

But don’t let your guard down, forecasters are still watching potential storms brewing just beyond the warm spell.

With weather maps shifting daily, it’s smart to stay tuned for the latest updates.
