Two employees of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC were killed in a shooting late Monday evening near the Jewish Museum, in what authorities and officials are calling a hate-motivated attack.

According to DC Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, a 30-year-old man from Chicago has been taken into police custody and is the main suspect in the case.

At a press conference Tuesday, Smith said the suspect approached a group of four people outside the museum and opened fire, killing an adult man and woman — both identified as Israeli embassy employees.

The two other individuals were not injured.

Suspect Shouted “Free Palestine” During Arrest

Following the shooting, the suspect reportedly attempted to enter the Jewish Museum, where an event was being held.

Museum security guards quickly intervened and stopped him before further harm could be done.

During his arrest, the man shouted “Free, free Palestine,” according to Chief Smith.

While investigations are ongoing, officials say the evidence points to a motivated hate crime, particularly given the location, victims, and suspect’s words.

Speaking at the press conference, Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, shared emotional details about the victims, describing them as a couple deeply in love.

He revealed that the man had already bought an engagement ring and planned to propose to his girlfriend next week.

“They were a beautiful couple,” said an emotional Leiter. “We mourn their loss deeply.”

He added that the embassy staff is grieving but standing together in unity.

We will not be afraid, and we will stand together. We will overcome the moral corruption of people who believe they can gain political gain by killing.

U.S. and Israeli Officials Condemn the Attack

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem confirmed early Tuesday on X that the victims were embassy staff.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser condemned the shooting as a “horrible” and unacceptable act of hate.

“We will not tolerate anti-Semitism,” Bowser said firmly, addressing the public during the press conference.

President Donald Trump also commented on the shooting via his social media platform, calling it “clearly rooted in anti-Semitism.”

These horrific DC killings must stop now. Hate and radicalism have no place in the United States,” Trump wrote. “My condolences to the families of the victims. So sad that such things can happen. God bless you all.

Ambassador Leiter also confirmed that he had spoken with Trump following the tragedy.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not released the name of the suspect, but confirmed he was arrested at the scene without further violence.

No additional suspects are currently being sought.

The FBI and local law enforcement are working together to investigate the motive and background of the suspect, including any connections to extremist ideologies or known hate groups.
