Part of a Disturbing Trend
Bagheri’s assassination follows a series of violent attacks targeting members of Iran’s judicial and religious establishment.
Four months ago, two Supreme Court judges were shot and killed in their office in Tehran by a gunman who later died by suicide.
One of the victims, Judge Mohammad Moghisseh, had previously been sanctioned by the United States for his role in presiding over what Washington described as “unfair trials.”
In April 2023, another high-profile figure — an ayatollah and member of the Assembly of Experts — was shot dead in northern Iran. That body plays a key role in overseeing the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Monday evening, just hours before Judge Bagheri was killed, another deadly incident unfolded in Shiraz.
Law enforcement officers shot and killed an armed individual who was responsible for the deaths of four people. The motives in that case also remain unknown, according to the Iranian judiciary.
Authorities have not linked any of these cases.
