Trump planning on adding 36 countries to travel ban, memo reveals

What is happening?

According to a memo obtained by the Washington Post, the Trump Administration is planning on adding 36 countries to the travel ban.

12 countries already on

Earlier this month, citizens from 12 countries were effectively banned from entering the US, after Trump sugned a proclamation to protect the US from “foreign terrorists”.

Full or partial

“The Department has identified 36 countries of concern that might be recommended for full or partial suspension of entry if they do not meet established benchmarks and requirements within 60 days,” the memo sent out over the weekend said.

The concerns raised to the 36 countries by the US State Department allegedly include lack of “competent or cooperative government”, “questionable scurity”, antisemic sentiments and anti-American activity.

12 countries already hit

The 12 countries that were hit by a full or partial travel-ban earlier this month, are:

  • Afghanistan
  • Myanmar
  • Chad
  • Congo Republic
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Yemen

7 countries hit with partial restrictions

On top of those 12 countries, citizens from seven other nations have been hit with partial travel-restrictions:

  • Burundi
  • Cuba
  • Laos
  • Sierra Leone
  • Togo
  • Turkmenistan
  • Venezuela
