Malaysia’s rising badminton star Justin Hoh is gearing up for the most significant challenge of his career as he prepares to make his North American debut at the upcoming US Open (June 24–29) and Canada Open (July 1–6).

The 21-year-old, currently ranked world No. 42 in men’s singles, is acutely aware of the costs associated with the long-haul trip and hopes to justify the investment made by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) with standout performances.

It’s expensive to go to the US, and I want to thank BAM for sending me. I really want to make this trip worthwhile, said Justin during a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara.

First Steps Into Uncharted Territory

Having never travelled to the United States or Canada, Justin admitted the journey will be his longest yet, both in terms of travel and what’s at stake.

The flight alone will take nearly a day. I’ve never been to this part of the world before. It’s a new experience and an opportunity I don’t take for granted.

Turning the Corner After Tough Season

It’s been a challenging year for the Malaysian shuttler, who has crashed out in the early rounds in seven of his last eight tournaments. His only deep run came last month at the Taiwan Open, where he reached the quarter-finals.

But a recent four-week block of centralised training at ABM has offered a chance to reset.

Before this, I was playing too many tournaments with not enough time to train. Over the past month, I’ve had good, focused sessions and I feel I’ve regained my rhythm. Hopefully, I can show that in my performances.

Pushing for the Top 32

Justin’s primary target this year is breaking into the world’s top 32, a ranking that would unlock access to the sport’s elite tournaments and boost his career trajectory.

A strong showing in North America could be pivotal, not only for points but for confidence.

I want to be more consistent and get into the higher-tier events. That’s where you test yourself against the best, and that’s what I’m aiming for.

With the backing of BAM and the weight of national expectations, Justin Hoh enters the North American swing with plenty to prove, and a determination to turn potential into results.
