His departure marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in international badminton
After 12 years at the helm of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Poul-Erik Høyer has stepped down as president. The transition took place during the federation’s annual meeting held in connection with the Sudirman Cup in Xiamen, China, where he passed the torch with great recognition and respect to his successor, Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul of Thailand.
As a special honor for his years of dedicated service, Høyer was awarded the title of Honorary Life Vice President, a distinction that solidifies his legacy in the sport and ensures his name remains permanently etched in badminton history.
A Charismatic Ambassador for Badminton
Poul-Erik Høyer has been an indispensable figure in both Danish and international badminton, first as a world-class player, winning Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996, and later as a prominent leader. When he was elected BWF president in 2013, the first Dane ever to hold the position, his leadership was marked by integrity, expertise, and a global perspective.

Under his guidance, badminton has grown in popularity, professionalism, and international reach. With a strategic focus on inclusion, sustainability, and technological development, Høyer has helped transform the sport into a modern and globally respected discipline.
Danish Continuity in Global Governance
Even as Høyer steps down, Danish representation in BWF leadership continues. Charlotte Dew-Hattens has been elected to the BWF Council for a new four-year term. Initially elected last year for a one-year period, she will now serve until 2029.
Kristian Pihl, Chairman of Badminton Denmark and Acting CEO, who attended the meeting in China, expressed pride in Denmark’s continued presence within BWF leadership:
Denmark is the only federation in the world that has been a permanent part of the BWF Council since its founding in 1934. We’re very proud of that, and we’re delighted that Charlotte will continue this tradition.
A Grateful Farewell
The farewell to Poul-Erik Høyer is not just a formal moment, but an emotional one, a farewell to an era in which Danish leadership has been central on the world badminton stage. A new era begins with Khunying Patama at the helm, bringing new energy, but Høyer leaves behind a legacy of diplomatic and athletic leadership.
