What It Means for Users

Amazon has confirmed it’s officially retiring its standalone Freevee app this August.

The move marks the end of an era for one of the company’s last remaining free streaming services, once praised for offering ad-supported TV without a subscription.

What Was Freevee, Exactly?

Freevee, formerly known as IMDb TV, launched in 2022 as Amazon’s answer to free streaming.

It offered a wide library of films, TV shows, and more than 75 live FAST channels, all accessible without a paid subscription, supported by ads.

Prime Video Is Now the New Home

While Freevee’s app is going away, its content isn’t.

Amazon is migrating all Freevee titles, including originals like Bosch: Legacy and Mad Men: Lost, to the main Prime Video platform.

And yes, you’ll still be able to stream them for free.

No Prime Subscription? No Problem

You don’t need to pay for a Prime membership to access this content.

As long as you have an Amazon account and can tolerate a few ads, you’ll be able to continue watching Freevee titles directly within the Prime Video interface.

Why Is Amazon Doing This?

The consolidation reflects a growing trend in the streaming world: fewer apps, more centralised platforms.

Amazon likely wants to streamline the user experience and reduce app clutter while pushing more traffic through its main Prime Video service.

What’s Happening in August?

That’s when the Freevee app will officially be deactivated. From that point on, users will be redirected to Prime Video to watch anything formerly hosted on Freevee.

If you have the app installed, it’ll no longer function as a standalone platform.

Amazon Prime Still Has Perks

While you don’t need to be a Prime member to watch Freevee content, signing up does unlock even more, like ad-free viewing, exclusive originals, and perks across Amazon’s other platforms like Music and faster shipping.
