New research has found that chocolate may do more than just satisfy your sweet tooth, it could also help fight jet lag. Scientists involved in the study discovered that consuming chocolate, especially when spiced with chilli, may improve mood and support the body’s adjustment to new time zones.
Project Sunrise: Tackling Long-Haul Fatigue

The study is part of Qantas’ “Project Sunrise,” a collaboration with the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre. With direct London-to-Sydney flights launching later in 2025, the research is aimed at making ultra-long-haul travel less taxing for the body and mind.
How Does Food Affects Your Body Clock?

During the project, researchers tested specific in-flight menus designed to help passengers sync their biological clocks with their destination. Meals included proteins like fish and chicken, quick-digesting carbohydrates, and comforting dishes like soups and milk-based desserts. Some of which help boost tryptophan, an amino acid linked to sleep.
Real-Time Testing at 35,000 Feet

To validate their approach, scientists monitored 23 volunteer passengers during 20-hour test flights. Travellers followed carefully choreographed routines, including meals timed to encourage either wakefulness or rest, exposure to tailored lighting, and regular movement.

The onboard environment was fine-tuned to support sleep cycles. Adjustable cabin lighting mimicked natural day-night rhythms, while passengers were guided through light stretching and encouraged to rest or stay alert at key moments during the flight.
What Role Does Chocolate Play in Jet Lag Relief?

Chocolate plays a unique role, not just as a treat but as a biological tool. When paired with spices like chilli, it may stimulate the body while also increasing tryptophan levels, helping travellers transition more smoothly across time zones.
