In response to trade pressure and rising tariffs, Ford has announced a €4.3 billion investment to expand electric vehicle production in the U.S. The move aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing, create thousands of jobs, and launch a new generation of affordable EVs.

€4.3 Billion for U.S.-Made EVs

Ford will invest €4.3 billion in its Kentucky and Michigan plants to ramp up electric vehicle production. The project includes a major expansion in Louisville and battery manufacturing at BlueOval Battery Park.

A New $30,000 Electric Pickup

The first vehicle built on Ford’s new EV platform will be a four-door electric pickup truck priced around $30,000 (€25,850). Launching in 2027, it promises more space than a Toyota RAV4 and includes both trunk and bed storage.

4,000 Jobs and Factory Expansion

The investment will create 4,000 new jobs and add over 15,800 square meters of production space to Ford’s Louisville plant. The move comes amid rising political pressure for automakers to invest more domestically.

Answering Trump’s 27.5% Tariffs

Ford’s announcement follows new 27.5% tariffs on vehicle imports imposed by President Trump. The company says tariffs have already cost the auto industry over €4.6 billion across the U.S. and Europe.

Ford’s new universal EV platform allows for scalable production across segments. It reduces components by 20%, cuts assembly time by 15%, and lowers maintenance costs—beating even a used Tesla Model Y in total ownership cost.

Cobalt-Free, Lightweight Battery Tech

Ford’s lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries will be cheaper, lighter, and free of cobalt and nickel. The batteries double as structural elements of the vehicle, reducing weight and improving efficiency.

A Strategic Shift Toward Affordability

With this launch, Ford is aiming to make EVs accessible to the average American family, not just early adopters. The company wants to lead in both affordability and production volume.

“Inspired by the Model T”

Ford EV chief Doug Field says the strategy echoes the spirit of the original Model T—innovative, scalable, and built for everyone. “We pushed physics to its limits to make it fun to drive and affordable to own,” he said.
