A popular brand of prosecco sold at Costco is being recalled due to a dangerous defect.

Here’s what you need to know and what to do if you have a bottle.

Kirkland Signature Prosecco

Costco is recalling 750ml bottles of Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene after discovering that some may spontaneously burst, posing a serious injury risk to consumers.

Even if the bottle is unopened and untouched.

The recall applies to bottles sold between April 25 and August 26, 2025, at Costco warehouses in 12 Midwestern states.

If you bought the prosecco in any of the following states, your bottle may be part of the recall Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

What’s the Risk?

According to Costco, the wine bottles are at risk of spontaneous explosion due to a manufacturing defect.

The issue could cause the glass to shatter without warning, potentially leading to cuts or other injuries.

The bottles may burst even if they are not being handled or moved.

What You Should Do

If you have this product at home:

  1. Do not attempt to open or drink it.
  2. Dispose of it carefully by wrapping the unopened bottle in paper towels and placing it in a plastic bag before putting it in the garbage.
  3. Do not recycle the bottle or attempt to return it in person unless instructed otherwise.
