What is happening?

The man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk had sent a text message declaring his intent to kill, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.

Speaking on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” Patel revealed that Tyler Robinson also left a handwritten note stating he had an “opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk.”

Although the note was destroyed, forensic analysis and interviews confirmed its existence and contents.

While the exact recipient of the text remains unknown, investigators say they’ve gathered enough forensic evidence to support the claim.

Patel didn’t say whether anyone had seen the note prior to the shooting, but confirmed its message during Monday’s interview.

No public motive yet

Authorities have yet to publicly identify a motive.

So far, they believe Robinson acted alone in the shooting, but the investigation remains open to determine if anyone else was involved in planning or encouraging the attack.

Discord message: “It was me”

According to a report from The Washington Post, Robinson appeared to confess on Discord shortly before his arrest.

A message sent Thursday night read, “It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this,” from an account belonging to Robinson.

The shooting

Charlie Kirk was killed last Wednesday by a single rifle shot during a public event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah—about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Kirk was known as a vocal supporter of Donald Trump and co-founder of the conservative student organization Turning Point USA.

Evidence ties Robinson to the scene

Patel told Fox News that DNA matching Robinson’s was discovered on a towel wrapped around the suspected murder weapon and on a screwdriver found on a rooftop used as a sniper perch.

Authorities believe this directly links Robinson to the crime scene.

Robinson, 22, has not spoken with law enforcement, according to Utah Governor Spencer Cox.

Authorities are now relying on interviews with friends and relatives to piece together what may have motivated the killing.

Political violence sparks national reaction

Kirk’s assassination has intensified concerns in a country already reeling from increased political violence. While both conservatives and liberals condemned the act, partisan blame has followed.

Some Republicans, including Trump, have pointed fingers at left-wing groups, though no evidence supports this.

Democrats have responded by pointing to broader trends of political targeting across the spectrum.

A complex personal background emerges

Public records show Robinson had no declared party affiliation and didn’t vote in the 2024 election.

However, a relative told police he had recently become more politically vocal and had expressed disdain for Kirk.

Still, many who knew him say he seemed like a “good kid” until something shifted.

Mourning and reflection

At the U.S. Capitol, Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republican leaders held a vigil for Kirk, attended by lawmakers and supporters.

Meanwhile, in Utah, makeshift memorials have sprung up on campus. Dally Bronson, a local dispatcher and Christian, summed up the heartbreak:
