All 20 soldiers on board a Turkish military cargo plane were killed when it crashed near the Georgia-Azerbaijan border on Tuesday, November 11.

The tragic news was confirmed by Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence.

The aircraft, a C-130 military transport plane, had taken off from Azerbaijan and was returning to Turkey when it went down in Georgia.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

Plane spiraled before crash

Video footage shared by Turkish news outlets appeared to show the aircraft spiraling down from the sky, trailing white smoke before crashing.

The C-130 is commonly used by Turkey’s armed forces for transporting personnel and equipment.

According to officials, there were 20 people on board the aircraft, including flight crew and military personnel.

All of them were confirmed dead.

Search and rescue efforts launched

The Turkish defence ministry released a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

“One of our C130 military cargo aircraft, which was taking off from Azerbaijan to come to our country, has crashed at the Georgia-Azerbaijan border. Search and rescue operations have begun in coordination with the authorities of Azerbaijan and Georgia. It is respectfully announced to the public.”

Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that search and rescue teams were deployed quickly but were unable to find any survivors.

Investigation underway

Investigators from both Georgia and Turkey are working to determine what caused the crash. Mechanical failure, weather conditions, or human error have not been ruled out.

Turkey is a member of NATO, and its military frequently carries out international missions and joint operations with regional partners.

This incident is one of the deadliest involving a Turkish military aircraft in recent years.
