A multistate Salmonella outbreak has prompted federal regulators to warn consumers about several greens powders sold online and in major retail chains across the United States.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says multiple products have been linked to illnesses, hospitalisations and a sweeping recall now underway.

The powders were sold on platforms including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Etsy and eBay, as well as at Sam’s Club stores. They are being pulled from shelves while investigators work to determine the source of contamination.

Products under recall

According to the FDA, several varieties of moringa and mixed greens powders have been connected to the outbreak.

The affected products include wide-ranging sizes and lot numbers:

  • Food To Live Organic Moringa Leaf Powder (8 oz to 44 lb bags), lot codes SO-69006 through SO-72558
  • Food To Live Organic Supergreens Powder Mix (8 oz to 12 lb bags), lot codes SO-69006 through SO-72558
  • Organic Moringa Leaf Powder sold through Africa Imports after June 5 (1-kg boxes)
  • All Member’s Mark Super Greens powders, with no restrictions on lot codes or best-by dates

Consumers who purchased any of these products are urged to check packaging immediately. The FDA advises either discarding the powders or returning them to the retailer for a refund.

Illnesses across several states

As of November 13, federal health officials have reported 11 confirmed illnesses, including three hospitalisations, linked to the contaminated powders.

Although the products were distributed nationwide, cases have so far been reported in Florida, Kansas, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The outbreak remains active, and investigators warn that additional products could be added to the recall as more information becomes available.

Symptoms to watch for

Salmonella infections — known as salmonellosis — can begin six hours to six days after exposure. Illness typically lasts up to a week.
