Tensions over immigration enforcement in the United States have grown in recent years. Cities across the country have seen protests and clashes whenever federal agents conduct raids.

The debate over public safety and civil rights has become heated.

This past weekend, federal agents carried out a large-scale operation in Charlotte, North Carolina, reports Digi24. At least 81 people were arrested in just five hours, according to Gregory Bovino, a U.S. Border Patrol official.

Bovino has led similar operations in Los Angeles and Chicago. He said many of those arrested had serious criminal and immigration records. This was the first day of federal operations in Charlotte.

Unfair Targeting

Neither the Border Patrol nor Immigration and Customs Enforcement immediately responded to requests for comment. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees both agencies, also did not provide a statement.

Protests erupted as news of the arrests spread. Citizens and activists accused federal agents of targeting people unfairly. Many said the raids affected people who were living in the U.S. legally.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, a Democrat, spoke out against the operation. He said undocumented immigrants with criminal records should be deported, but that the federal agents’ actions in Charlotte were harmful to the community.

“We saw masked, heavily armed agents in paramilitary gear driving unmarked cars,” Stein said. “They targeted American citizens based on skin color, picked people up randomly from sidewalks and parking lots, and went into churches and stores.

They even approached workers decorating a Christmas tree in someone’s yard. That does not make us safer. It fuels fear and divides our community.”

A Response to Local Authorities

Federal officials said the Charlotte raids were a response to local authorities refusing to comply with about 1,400 “detainer” requests. These requests allow immigration agents to hold suspects for up to 48 hours after their normal release.

Immigration enforcement has been a major focus of the Trump administration. Since taking office, federal agents have conducted raids in both Democratic-run cities and conservative rural areas.
