Early work on the long-awaited God of War television adaptation is moving ahead as the production settles into Vancouver.

The project, backed by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, has begun shaping its creative team while fans wait for further details.

Two seasons have already been commissioned, signaling strong confidence in the series before filming begins.

Big creative start

Deadline reported that Frederick E.O. Toye, who earned an Emmy for his work on FX’s Shōgun, will direct the opening two episodes.

His appointment places an experienced hand at the front of the adaptation, which has drawn intense interest since plans were first disclosed in 2022.

Toye arrives alongside showrunner Ronald D. Moore.

According to Deadline, Moore’s background includes influential work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Battlestar Galactica, making him one of the most notable figures shaping the new series.

Toye’s résumé extends across two decades of major U.S. television.

Deadline noted his directing credits on Lost, Alias, Fringe, The Good Wife, Person of Interest, Designated Survivor, and Westworld, as well as recent high-profile series such as The Boys, Fallout, The Terminal List, and its follow-up The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.

Adapting a modern classic

For now, Amazon and Sony have kept the plot under wraps.

What has been confirmed, Deadline reported, is that the show will draw on the 2018 reboot of God of War, which shifted the franchise from Greek mythology to a Norse setting and introduced a more character-driven approach.

The 2018 release was later followed by God of War Ragnarök in 2022, continuing the saga that revived the long-running PlayStation franchise.

The first God of War game debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, laying the foundation for what would become one of gaming’s most enduring action series.

Its evolution now brings it to television in what is expected to be one of Amazon’s most ambitious genre adaptations to date.

Looking ahead

With pre-production underway and the initial episodes now assigned, work on the series is likely to accelerate through the year.
