Louis Theroux has opened up about his personal past while discussing his latest documentary exploring online masculinity culture.
The filmmaker said he can relate to some of the emotions expressed by figures featured in the series.
Theroux’s Netflix documentary Inside the Manosphere follows controversial influencers and examines the rise of online communities centered around male identity and relationships.
Speaking on Chris Williamson’s Modern Wisdom podcast, Theroux reflected on his own younger years.
“I joke that I was an incel before it was fashionable,” he said. “Like, I can relate. I can relate to the feeling of like, ‘Wow, why am I the only one with a dance card with no names on it?’”

Inside the manosphere

“They’re kids and young men who are trying to figure out where they fit in in life,” he said.

He added that similar pressures can affect women, though in different ways, particularly around beauty standards and online image culture.
Despite disagreeing with some of the views expressed in the documentary, Theroux said he does not “dislike” the individuals involved.
