The pot calling the kettle black …
Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service pointed an accusing finger straight at the European Union on Monday.
According to Russian state media reports, Moscow claims European officials are organizing a broad campaign to disrupt the country’s upcoming September parliamentary elections.
Officials in Moscow alleged that Western nations have pressed Ukraine to increase strikes deep inside Russian territory. They also claimed European agencies are actively discussing plans for cyberattacks aimed directly at Russia’s electronic voting infrastructure.
In addition, Russian intelligence accused the European Union of planning disruptions at physical polling places both at home and abroad.
They claim Western officials want to create chaos on election day.
The foreign agency further claimed that Western governments instructed exiled opposition groups to challenge the results. According to Moscow, these groups were told to launch boycott campaigns and mount immediate legal fights after voting ends.
Brussels hits back
Brussels was swift to push back against the accusations. Speaking to the Kyiv Independent on August 31, European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper completely rejected the statements coming out of Moscow.
“Contrary to Russia, the European Union does not interfere in elections,” Hipper stated clearly to the outlet.
She noted that Moscow has repeatedly failed to maintain acceptable democratic standards in previous national votes. European officials argue that the true threat to voter freedom rests inside Russia’s own political system.
A widening divide
Hipper sharply criticized Moscow’s political environment, contrasting it with the principles supported across Europe. She stressed that democratic choices belong solely to the public.
“Their behaviour is marked by repressive laws, persecution of political opposition leaders, civil society representatives and journalists. We stand for free and fair elections. Elections must remain in the hands of citizens,” Hipper told the Kyiv Independent.
This bitter exchange underscores the immense trust deficit between Moscow and Western capitals. With polling day fast approaching, the rhetorical battle over legitimacy shows no signs of slowing down.
