Bulgaria appears headed for another political turning point after voters handed a strong mandate to former president Rumen Radev and his party.
The result could reshape the country’s direction as it balances ties between the European Union and Russia.

According to Dr News, citing election data, Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria party secured close to 45 percent of the vote, with most ballots counted, putting it well ahead of rivals.

The outcome marks one of the strongest performances in recent years for a country that has faced repeated elections and prolonged instability.

Strong mandate

Radev, a 62-year-old former fighter pilot, has campaigned on tackling corruption and supporting lower-income groups in Bulgaria, the EU’s poorest member state.

He addressed supporters after the vote, saying: “This is a victory for hope over distrust, a victory for freedom over fear and finally – if you will – a victory of morality.”

Despite his criticism of parts of EU policy, he also signaled continuity in Bulgaria’s broader alignment with Europe.

Balancing act

Radev said Bulgaria would “make great efforts to continue on its European path” while urging a more critical approach within the bloc.

He has previously highlighted the importance of maintaining economic ties with Russia and opposed some EU positions, including military support for Ukraine.

This dual stance has raised questions about how his government will navigate competing pressures.

Political pressure

Analysts say Radev could face internal and external pressure over the direction of his policies.

Daniel Smilov, a political scientist, noted uncertainty over whether the new leadership would pursue a Eurosceptic course or maintain closer EU alignment.

Observers say the final outcome may depend on coalition decisions, as Radev has not ruled out working with pro-European parties.

Years of instability

The election follows a prolonged period of political turmoil, with Bulgaria holding eight elections in five years, according to Reuters.

The latest result could offer greater stability if it leads to a clear governing majority.

However, underlying challenges remain, including corruption concerns and economic pressures linked to rising living costs.

Economic tensions

Bulgaria has seen progress since joining the EU in 2007, but continues to lag behind other member states on several indicators.

Radev has criticized the adoption of the euro and called for a stronger focus on traditional energy sources, including Russian oil and gas.

At the same time, public dissatisfaction over economic conditions has contributed to recent political upheaval.

Looking ahead

The scale of Radev’s victory may give him room to shape Bulgaria’s policy direction, but expectations remain high.

How he balances relations with the EU while addressing domestic concerns will be key to determining whether the country moves toward stability or renewed uncertainty.
