Vladimir Putin has long cultivated an image of strength and control.

He rarely faces open criticism at home, but recent developments suggest that this perception may be starting to shift.

Rare criticism emerges

Yuri Baluyevsky, former chief of the Russian General Staff and a former deputy defense minister, has openly criticised President Vladimir Putin’s approach to the war.

Speaking at the Russian Public Chamber, he warned that indecision and strategic weaknesses could pose risks to the country’s long-term stability.

According to his remarks cited by O2, Moscow has not responded forcefully enough to Ukrainian attacks during the conflict.

Questions over response

Baluyevsky referred to incidents in 2023, including reported Ukrainian drone strikes targeting the presidential residence in Moscow and AWACS aircraft.

“We’ve certainly moved past the days of discussing “red lines.” Today, these lines are becoming less and less significant,” he said.

His comments suggest that previous deterrence strategies are no longer effective in the current phase of the war.

Weapons and reality

The former commander also addressed Russia’s development of advanced weaponry, including hypersonic systems.

“We had weapons that others could not dream of, and yet we are not safer,” he said, questioning the practical impact of such capabilities.

He argued that possessing advanced arms has not translated into improved national security outcomes.

Call for action

Baluyevsky urged a more decisive approach, raising doubts about Russia’s ability to sustain a prolonged war of attrition against Ukraine and its Western allies.

“When will we really start fighting? Either Russia will be strong or it will cease to exist altogether,” he said.

Known for previously advocating preemptive nuclear options in extreme scenarios, he is now calling for a reassessment of Russia’s current military strategy.
