Do Russians want to overthrow Putin? Leaked intel says he thinks so

Vladimir Putin may no longer feel as secure as he once did.

After decades of ruling Russia with a firm grip signs are emerging that the Kremlin leader is growing increasingly wary of those around him.

Now, new intelligence claims are adding to that picture.

Intelligence claims

According to reporting by the investigative outlet Vaznye Istorii cited by O2, intelligence from an unnamed European Union country points to growing concerns about a possible plot against President Vladimir Putin.

“The document was provided by a source associated with the service that prepared it,” the outlet reported.

The claims suggest fears within the Kremlin have intensified in recent months.

Putin’s concerns about a potential coup reportedly increased in March 2026.

“In particular, he fears the use of drones in a potential attack by representatives of the Russian political elite,” the report states.

These fears are said to have prompted a significant tightening of security measures.

Heightened protection

Security around the Russian leader has been reinforced with stricter screening procedures and reduced access.

Reports describe two-stage checks for visitors, including personal searches by Federal Protection Service officers.

Putin is also said to be spending extended periods in fortified bunkers rather than traveling to traditional residences.

Additional precautions reportedly include limits on visits to military sites and strict controls on those working closely with the president.

Individuals in his inner circle are said to be banned from using mobile phones or public transport.

Such measures are seen as part of broader efforts to reduce potential risks.

Internal tensions

The report also points to possible divisions within Russia’s security and military leadership.

During a closed-door meeting, senior officials reportedly exchanged criticism over failures to protect key figures.

“At the end of the tense meeting, Putin called for calm and ordered the participants to present proposals for solutions within a week,” the outlet reported.

Speculation has also emerged about the role of senior figures, including former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

According to the report, recent arrests within his circle may have weakened his position and increased tensions among elites.

However, these claims remain unverified.

Broader signals

Vaznye Istorii said some elements of the report are supported by other sources.

“Several sources also confirm Putin’s growing fears of a conspiracy or coup. This is indicated not only by tightened security measures but also by indirect signals, such as more difficult access to wiretapping permits, as the equipment has been redirected to monitoring power structures,” the outlet reported.

The developments come shortly before Russia’s May 9 Victory Day parade.

This year’s event will reportedly lack traditional displays of heavy military equipment, with officials citing “operational circumstances.”
