The image of a fearless strongman has been the glue holding the Kremlin’s power structure together.

This carefully crafted persona is designed to project absolute control, ensuring that both allies and enemies know exactly who is in charge.

However, even the toughest facades can begin to show signs of wear when the pressure from within and without starts to mount.

Deeply puzzled

The streets of Moscow are currently preparing for the annual Victory Day parade this Saturday, but the mood is anything but celebratory for the man at the top.

Vladimir Putin, the 73 year old Russian leader, is facing a wave of online ridicule over his reported state of high alert.

According to the Daily Express, the Kremlin dictator is hunkering in his bunkers. He reportedly fears that a coup could be brewing within his own inner circle. This internal anxiety comes at a time when external threats from across the border are growing more dangerous.

Ukrainian missiles and drones have become more advanced, reaching further into Russian territory than ever before. These technical gains have turned a day of military glory into a potential security nightmare.

The Daily Express reported that social media users are now mocking the president for his apparent obsession with safety.

One man’s mission

Internet memes have turned the Russian leader into a laughing stock.

Some images show him hiding under armor plated umbrellas. Others depict him covered in anti drone nets as he tries to shield himself from the sky. One AI generated video even shows him being chased by a Ukrainian drone.

“A drone is chasing me,” the digital version of Putin says in the clip. “Get away from me! Stop! Police! Help! It is right above me. Stay where you are! What is happening? Who is controlling this thing?”

The footage then cuts to show the controls in the hands of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Daily Express reported that Zelensky believes the conflict would finish today if Russia simply stopped its attacks. So far, that remains a distant hope.

The emperor’s clothes

Online critics are not holding back their opinions on the president’s current state of mind.

Commenter Sergey Afanasyev stated that the leader belongs in a court in The Hague rather than on a podium. He argued that the current image of the Russian state is falling apart.

“His cult of personality is built on a facade: the tsar, the parade, the fanfare,” Afanasyev said.

He added that the public needs to see the reality behind the propaganda. He described the ruler as “nothing but a frightened old man, looking up at the sky.”

As the parade approaches, the world is watching to see how much of the military display is about strength and how much is about survival. For a man who prizes control, the sight of a leader hiding in a bunker is a difficult image to shake.
