BYD’s latest electric SUV is already drawing huge attention after reportedly securing more than 100,000 orders shortly after launch in China.
The new Datang combines long driving range, ultra-fast charging and luxury-focused features at a price that could increase pressure on rivals like Tesla, Kia and Hyundai.
Massive early demand
According to Yahoo Autos, citing Electrek, BYD received over 100,000 orders for the Datang SUV within two weeks of its debut.
The three-row electric SUV reportedly offers up to 590 miles of range and starts at around $36,500, making it significantly cheaper than many competing premium EVs.
Higher-spec versions are expected to cost closer to $47,000.
Charging tech grabs attention
A major selling point is BYD’s latest Flash Charging technology, which the company says can dramatically reduce charging times.
The Datang uses BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 system alongside the new charging platform, with reports claiming compatible chargers can add significant range in just minutes.
The rapid-charging push comes as automakers race to ease consumer concerns around charging times and long-distance travel.
Luxury features packed inside
The SUV also focuses heavily on premium technology and comfort features.
Electrek reported the Datang includes multiple digital screens, a roof-mounted entertainment display and “zero-gravity” seating aimed at boosting passenger comfort.
The vehicle also features BYD’s “God’s Eye B” driver-assistance system with a roof-mounted lidar sensor.
Rivals face growing pressure
Industry analysts say Chinese EV makers are increasingly challenging established automakers by combining aggressive pricing with advanced technology.
BYD has rapidly expanded globally in recent years and has overtaken several major brands in EV sales across multiple markets.
The Datang’s early popularity highlights growing demand for larger electric SUVs that offer long range without luxury-level pricing.
Bigger EV battle ahead
The launch also reflects how quickly competition in the EV market is accelerating, particularly around charging speed and affordability.
While the Datang is currently launching in China, BYD continues expanding internationally as more automakers compete to deliver cheaper, faster-charging electric vehicles.
The company’s growing influence is expected to increase pressure on global rivals already facing tougher competition in the EV sector.
