A disturbing video released by the Ukrainian OSINT project DeepState, shared by independent Russian news site Meduza has reportedly shows Russian soldiers executing unarmed Ukrainian soldiers at close range in the Donetsk region's Pokrovskyi district.

The footage, captured by a drone north of Avdiivka, appears to show a group of individuals in Russian military uniforms opening fire on two Ukrainian servicemen who were visibly surrendering.

In the video, at least six soldiers, believed to be Russian, are seen standing near a shelter with machine guns. Two Ukrainian soldiers emerge from the shelter, one with his hands behind his head. As soon as the second soldier lies down, the Russian-uniformed soldiers reportedly commence firing.

The Donetsk Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident, citing potential "violations of the laws and customs of war, including intentional murder," under Ukraine's Criminal Code.

The Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that the video clearly shows unarmed servicemen in Ukrainian uniforms being shot at point-blank range while surrendering.

Oleksandr Shtupun, spokesperson for Ukraine's Tavria military command, confirmed that the authenticity of the video is under verification. He highlighted that such crimes are not subject to a statute of limitations and all evidence will be forwarded to international bodies dealing with war crimes.

The Ukrainian military's Strategic Communications Center has stated that, based on confirmed information, the Russian soldiers shot unarmed soldiers. This claim aligns with the observations of Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets, who noted that the Ukrainian soldiers in the video were visibly unarmed and surrendering, thus posing no threat to the Russian military.

Lubinets plans to bring this matter to the attention of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations, advocating for the victims to be granted POW status.

As of now, the Russian Defense Ministry has not issued any comments regarding the incident. This event has raised serious concerns about the conduct of Russian forces in the conflict and the treatment of prisoners of war, as outlined by international humanitarian law.
