Tesla owners may soon be able to access one of the world’s biggest gaming platforms directly from their cars.
According to Mashable, Elon Musk recently confirmed that Tesla is “making progress with Steam integration,” with a demo potentially arriving as early as next month.
Massive game library
Tesla cars already include built-in games such as Solitaire, Chess, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Beach Buggy Racing 2.
But integrating Steam would dramatically expand what drivers can play.
Steam is one of the largest gaming platforms in the world, offering more than 50,000 games ranging from indie titles to major releases like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Cyberpunk 2077.
The move could turn certain Tesla models into portable gaming systems while parked or charging.
Console-level power
Tesla’s newer Model S and Model X vehicles already include surprisingly powerful hardware.
Their infotainment systems run on AMD Ryzen processors combined with AMD RDNA-2 graphics chips, similar to the technology used in modern gaming consoles.
Musk has previously claimed the systems are capable of running graphically demanding games, including Cyberpunk 2077.
Tesla has increasingly focused on entertainment features in recent years as part of its broader software-driven approach to vehicles.
More than driving
The company already offers streaming apps, internet browsing, karaoke features, and in-car gaming as part of its infotainment system.
Steam integration would represent Tesla’s biggest gaming expansion yet and could further separate the brand from traditional automakers.
Some Tesla owners have even used wireless controllers and accessories to play games while charging their vehicles during long trips.
The feature would likely appeal especially to younger drivers and tech-focused buyers.
Safety concerns
Tesla’s gaming ambitions have also faced criticism from regulators.
In late 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation after reports that some games could be played while vehicles were moving.
Safety experts warned the feature could distract drivers and increase crash risks.
Tesla later disabled gaming while driving, meaning any future Steam integration will likely only work while the vehicle is parked.
