Rad Life Mobility is promising up to 50 percent off safer replacement batteries for older e-bikes, but the most important details are still missing.

Thousands of owners of older Rad Power Bikes e-bikes may soon be able to upgrade to safer battery technology at half the original cost.

The new company behind the brand, Rad Life Mobility, has sent out an email about an upcoming discount programme.

The programme targets owners with older battery packs, and promises discounts of up to 50 percent on the newer Safe Shield technology.

Details remain sparse, however, and the exact models that qualify have not yet been announced.

According to Electrek

A new company behind a familiar name

Rad Life Mobility states clearly in the email that it is “an independent company not affiliated with Rad Power Bikes Inc.” That is an important distinction. The original Rad Power Bikes, which was at one point one of North America’s largest e-bike brands, went through a turbulent restructuring marked by layoffs, lawsuits and falling sales before Rad Life Mobility acquired its assets earlier this year.

The new company has therefore inherited both the brand and the technology, but is formally a separate legal entity. Owners who sign up for updates will, according to the email, be contacted with information specific to their individual bike.

What is Safe Shield technology?

Safe Shield batteries were developed as a significant safety improvement over conventional e-bike batteries. Where standard battery packs typically separate cells using air gaps and plastic spacers, Safe Shield uses a thermally resistant casting material that insulates each cell from its neighbours.

The purpose is to prevent a single faulty cell from triggering a chain reaction that ignites the rest of the battery. At launch, the technology was considered one of the more advanced consumer-level battery safety measures on the market, and it arrived at a time when city fire authorities and regulators around the world were beginning to tighten requirements for e-bike batteries.

Background: CPSC warning and fire risk

The context surrounding this programme is serious. In late 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a safety warning regarding certain older Rad battery packs following reports of overheating.

The new discount programme can therefore be seen as a direct response to that warning and an effort to ensure that existing owners are not continuing to ride with potentially hazardous batteries. When exactly the programme will launch, and which generations of bikes will qualify, is expected to be clarified in the coming weeks.
