Dundee is a Dundee-al

Dundee has been named the cheapest city in the UK for petrol, with prices averaging just £1.25 per litre and drivers spending only 2.71% of their monthly income on fuel.

How Researchers Found the Cheapest City

The study by Ovoko analysed petrol prices across UK cities and counties, comparing them to average income levels to uncover the most affordable places to refuel.

Northern Ireland Comes Close

County Tyrone and Belfast ranked just behind Dundee, with average petrol prices of £1.26 per litre and similar affordability scores.

Other Affordable Regions

Armagh and Antrim completed the top five, both averaging £1.27 per litre and seeing drivers spend around 2.74% of their monthly income on fuel.

Dumfriesshire in Scotland was found to be the most expensive region, with motorists paying £1.49 per litre – a 24p premium compared to Dundee.

Scotland’s Other High-Cost Areas

Ross-shire, Peeblesshire and Inverness-shire were also among the priciest, with petrol costing around £1.36 per litre.

Why Some Areas Pay More

Experts point to higher distribution costs and less competition in remote locations as key reasons for significant price differences.

How Much the Difference Matters

A driver in Dumfriesshire could end up paying more than £200 extra per year for fuel compared to someone in Dundee, purely due to location.

What Experts Are Calling For

There are growing calls for policymakers to consider targeted support for residents in high-cost fuel regions, especially remote Scottish communities.
