BMW is completely reinventing its iconic 3 Series by dropping diesel engines and adopting the Neue Klasse architecture, offering a 443-hp mild-hybrid inline-six alongside a new electric i3 capable of an astonishing 912 kilometers of range.
BMW is radically overhauling the heart of its lineup. The next generation of the iconic 3 Series is abandoning diesel entirely, splitting its identity between electrified combustion engines and a massive leap forward in pure electric performance.
According to elEconomista, the German automaker is rolling out its highly anticipated Neue Klasse technology platform. This architecture introduces the new BMW i3, completely redefining the nameplate into a heavy-hitting electric sedan capable of traveling over 900 kilometers on a single charge.
Massive range and 800-volt charging
The electric lineup kicks off with the i3 40 xDrive, featuring dual motors, 374 horsepower, and an 82.8 kWh battery that delivers up to 710 kilometers of WLTP range. But the true flagship of the electric fleet is the i3 50 xDrive. Packing 469 horsepower and a massive 108.7 kWh battery pack, this version pushes the maximum range to an astonishing 912 kilometers.
To support such massive batteries, BMW is utilizing an 800-volt electrical architecture that allows for rapid charging at speeds up to 400 kW. Under optimal conditions, the i3 50 xDrive can recover 423 kilometers of range in a mere ten minutes. For buyers seeking even more performance, an extreme i3 M60 xDrive variant is slated to arrive in 2027.
The end of diesel and a 443-hp petrol swan song
While the electric i3 represents the future, BMW is not abandoning internal combustion just yet. However, the legendary diesel engines that once defined the European 3 Series market have been permanently retired.
Instead, the combustion lineup will rely on 48-volt mild-hybrid gasoline engines, with plug-in hybrid options arriving later. The crown jewel of the combustion range is the new M350 xDrive. Powered by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine paired with mild-hybrid assistance, it generates 443 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive sedan can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds. In a nod to driving purists, BMW has equipped the M350 with a new “Drift Moment” feature, allowing the system to route power exclusively to the rear axle for controlled oversteer. The combustion lineup will also feature two four-cylinder engine options at launch.
A unified Neue Klasse aesthetic
Regardless of the powertrain, the entire 3 Series lineup will share a unified visual identity based on the Neue Klasse design language. The classic sedan proportions remain intact with a long wheelbase and short overhangs, but the exterior introduces flush, retractable door handles and a newly integrated front fascia that merges the iconic double-kidney grille with twin headlights.
Inside the cabin, physical buttons are largely replaced by the new BMW Panoramic iDrive interface. The dashboard is dominated by a massive 17.9-inch central touchscreen running BMW Operating System X. The system integrates touch controls, steering wheel inputs, an optional 3D Head-Up Display, and an advanced voice assistant powered by Amazon Alexa+ technology.
To manage the technological split, production duties will be divided by powertrain. The electric i3 variants will be assembled at the Munich plant, while the combustion models will roll off the line in Dingolfing.
