Viewers have voted: John Carpenter, Alfred Hitchcock, and other great legends are celebrated in Letterboxd’s list of the best horror films ever. Perhaps some suggestions for your Halloween movie list?
The horror genre has never lacked strong opinions. Ask ten horror fans about the best film ever, and chances are you’ll get ten different answers.
Nevertheless, there is one list that many keep a close eye on because it is based on ratings from hundreds of thousands of film enthusiasts worldwide.
Letterboxd has just updated its official ranking of the 250 highest-rated horror films of all time, and the top spot goes to a film that still divides opinions almost 30 years after its premiere.
Japanese Psychological Nightmare Tops the List
At the top is Perfect Blue from 1997, Satoshi Kon’s critically acclaimed anime thriller, which has achieved cult status over the years. The film blends identity crisis, psychological horror, and suspense in a way that continues to impress both new and old viewers.
Close behind is John Carpenter’s The Thing, while the classic The Silence of the Lambs takes third place.
The list also demonstrates the broad scope the horror genre has achieved. Gothic vampire stories and classic haunted houses are largely absent in favor of psychological horror, science fiction, thrillers, and arthouse films.
Old Classics Endure
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho from 1960 remains among the genre’s absolute titans, securing the fifth spot.
Ridley Scott’s Alien also proves that a film can be both science fiction and pure horror. Despite being almost half a century old, it continues to rank among the ten highest-rated horror films on the platform.
At the same time, lesser-known titles such as the Czechoslovakian The Cremator, Japanese Cure, and the anthology film Kwaidan have found their way into the top positions, underscoring that Letterboxd users don’t just vote for the biggest Hollywood productions.
