Food recalls happen regularly in the United States, especially when there is a risk of dangerous bacteria getting into products sold in stores.
Health officials often warn consumers quickly because contaminated food can spread illness fast, especially when the product is eaten fresh or lightly cooked.
Two brand recalls mushrooms
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced recalls for two brands of enoki mushrooms over fears of possible Listeria contamination, reports EatingWell. The affected mushrooms were sold in 150-gram bags and tested positive for the bacteria during product checks.
The recalled products include IQ Enoki Mushrooms with the code “UI775.” The second product is HH Fresh Trading Enoki Mushrooms with the code “4711498860002.” According to officials, the HH Fresh Trading mushrooms were sold through wholesalers in Florida and Texas.
Consumers are being urged to check any enoki mushrooms they may have at home. Anyone who bought the recalled products should either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a possible refund.
Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous bacteria that can cause a serious infection known as listeriosis. While healthy people sometimes experience only mild symptoms, the infection can become severe for older adults, pregnant women, young children, and people with weakened immune systems.
Check for symptoms
Doctors say symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle pain, confusion, stiff neck, loss of balance, and even seizures in severe cases. Some people may not feel sick immediately because symptoms can appear days or even weeks after eating contaminated food.
Health experts warn that Listeria spreads easily inside kitchens. The bacteria can move from contaminated food onto hands, counters, refrigerators, and other surfaces. Because of that, the FDA advises consumers to wash their hands carefully after handling recalled mushrooms. Kitchen surfaces and storage areas should also be cleaned thoroughly.
People who begin feeling sick after eating enoki mushrooms are being advised to contact a healthcare provider as soon as possible, especially if they belong to a higher-risk group.
Customers with questions about the recalls can contact IQ Produce directly at 1-323-889-9301. HH Fresh Trading has also provided a customer support number at 262-365-9116.
The FDA continues to monitor the situation while stores remove the affected mushroom products from circulation.
