The daffodil is more than just a cheerful spring flower.

It’s a symbol of light, warmth, and everything we love about the season waking up from winter.

But if you want to enjoy these sunny yellow flowers indoors, there are a few things you need to know—because daffodils are surprisingly easy to ruin.

Here are five essential tips to make your daffodils last longer and bloom more beautifully, according to Idényt:

1. Give Them a Clean Cut

Start by trimming 1–2 cm off the stems at a 45-degree angle. Why the angle? It increases the surface area for water uptake and helps prevent the stems from sealing up too quickly. Without this cut, your daffodils might wilt sooner than you’d expect.

2. Watch the Water (And the Leaves)

Daffodils love fresh water, but they don’t want to bathe in it. Fill a clean vase with cool to lukewarm water, and make sure no leaves are submerged—this can cause rot and bacterial growth, which will shorten the life of your bouquet.

3. Keep Them Solo

As beautiful as mixed flower arrangements can be, daffodils should never share a vase. They release a sap that’s toxic to other flowers (and also mildly toxic to pets). Let them shine on their own—your other flowers will thank you.

4. Keep Fruit Away

That bowl of apples on the counter may look innocent, but ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas, which accelerates the aging process in flowers. Keep your daffodils and your produce in separate areas to avoid an early bloom death.

5. Change the Water Often

Just like us, flowers thrive with fresh hydration. Replace the water daily or every other day, and always rinse the vase to prevent bacterial buildup. It’s a small habit that makes a big difference in how long your daffodils stay vibrant.

With just a little care, your daffodils will stay radiant and full of life—bringing warmth, joy, and a hint of spring sunshine to your space while we wait for gardens to bloom outside.
