Let’s be clear: Most of the electric heating blankets out there are fine and won’t pose a significant risk against you and your home.

That being say, all electric equipment comes with a risk of fire, and heating blankets are no exception.

Government statistics from the UK show that electric blankets are linked to around 43 house fires each year. Separately, Nottingham Council’s Trading Standards team reported in 2025 that 69% of electric blankets tested in residents’ homes were found to be unsafe.

The findings have prompted renewed warnings from safety professionals, who say ageing or poorly made products pose the greatest risk.

Express reports that Saga Home Insurance has highlighted the issue after speaking to experienced firefighter Andrew Topping about common hazards.

“Used correctly, electric blankets are a safe form of heating, or alternatively, use a hot water bottle to heat the bed,” Topping said.

He warned that problems often stem from poor-quality or counterfeit products and that neglected blankets can overheat due to worn components and faulty internal wiring.

Simple steps

Users are advised to check for exposed wires, thinning fabric or other visible damage. Blankets should be stored flat, never plugged into an extension lead, and unplugged before falling asleep.

Topping also warns, that if you got your electric blanket surprisingly cheap, it might not be perfectly safe.
