Consumers across the U.S. are being urged to check their refrigerators after a major recall affecting more than 1 million bags of shredded cheese sold at Walmart, Aldi, Target, Publix and dozens of other retailers.

The recall involves 64 different cheese products that may contain metal fragments.

What’s being recalled

The products include a wide range of shredded mozzarella, Italian blends, pizza blends, mozzarella–provolone mixes and mozzarella–Parmesan mixes.

Package sizes vary from 8-ounce bags to 5-pound bulk packs, with sell-by dates extending through March 2026.

Brands impacted span both national and store-label lines, including Aldi’s Happy Farms, Great Value (Walmart), Good & Gather (Target), Publix, H-E-B, Sprouts Farmers Market, Stater Bros., Food Lion, Lucerne, Brookshire’s, Borden, Cache Valley, Coburn Farms, and many others.

Where the cheese was sold

The recalled items were distributed in 32 states and regions, including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

According to the FDA, the cheese may contain metal fragments originating from “the supplier’s raw material.”

Because of this, the recall has been classified as Class II, meaning the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

Consumers who eat the contaminated cheese could risk mouth or throat injuries, digestive issues or other short-term medical complications.

What consumers should do

Officials are urging shoppers to check all shredded cheese in their refrigerator for matching UPCs and batch codes.

Dispose of any affected product immediately or return it to the store for a refund. Contact the retailer or manufacturer with questions.
