A recurring tactic from Trump and his MAGA administration has been the use of culture wars to help enact their policies.
This cultural conflict is also designed to degrade voters on the other side of the political spectrum and to distract from other stories and scandals.
The transgender witch hunt has been the go-to case for the Trump administration in its second term. Now, that culture war is spilling into exposed communities and threatening their health and safety.
Unprecedented healthcare ban
Trump and his administration have finalized a rule cutting federal Medicaid money for youth gender-affirming care. According to National Public Radio (NPR), health group KFF estimates that 130,000 transgender minors will be affected by it.
Georgetown legal expert Katie Keith called the ban “unprecedented” and “untested.”
Administration officials defended the shift on public platforms. In a video broadcast, Medicaid administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz outlined the official stance. “When the harms of sex-rejecting procedures are so serious and the evidence is weak, the government cannot keep signing these checks,” he said.
Political motives quickly entered the picture. Donald Trump took to Truth Social and tied the ban straight to the ballot box. “Please remember this when you are casting your vote in the Midterm Elections in November,” he posted, hoping that this transgender culture war issue will resonate with his voter base.
Families are panicking
For affected families, this particular culture war hit close to home. NPR spoke with a California mother, a lifelong Republican who joined Medicaid after her husband lost his job. Suddenly, her family was caught in the eye of the cultural storm.
“It’s heartbreaking and devastating to have your child used as basically a political football,” the mother told NPR. “At the beginning of all of this, I was terrified. And now I’m just really f***ing angry.”
The culture war surrounding American transgender kids is a successful narrative driven by the Trump administration create political division.
Political warfare
It is also a part of a misinformation campaign in which the administration is arguing that Democratic doctors are tricking families into gender-affirming care and sometimes even surgeries for profit. The mother NPR spoke with dismisses that particular claim.
“This whole notion that it’s woke Democrats that are turning our kids into being trans is idiotic,” the mother says. So is the argument that doctors are driven by profit. “It’s kind of laughable because the population is so small,” she says. “So why? Why? Why are they doing this?”
She further argues that one of the reasons Trump and his administration are doing this now is to score cheap political points at a time when Trump desperately needs every political win he can get.
Legal battles to combat this ban are already forming. GLAD Law attorney Jennifer Levi told NPR that rights groups expect court challenges against the rule.
