The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for Lewis Bake Shop’s Artisan Style ½ Loaf after it was found to contain hazelnuts not listed on the label.

The 12-ounce bread loaves were sold at Walmart, Kroger, and other grocery stores in 14 states, with an expiration date of July 13, 2025, meaning the bread may still be sitting in consumers’ pantries or freezers.

What to check for

The recall specifically affects products with UPC code 24126018152 and one of the following lot codes:

  • T10 174010206
  • T10 174010306
  • T10 174010406
  • T10 174020206
  • T10 174020306
  • T10 174020406

If you spot any of these codes on your loaf, do not consume it.

Instead, throw it away or return it to the store where you bought it for a possible refund.

According to Walmart’s website, the recalled loaves were sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

Why hazelnuts are dangerous for some people

Hazelnuts are one of the most common food allergens, especially in children and adults with nut allergies.

Because the allergen was not listed on the packaging, people who are sensitive to nuts could unknowingly consume it.

Severe reactions can include:

  • Hives or skin rash
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Trouble breathing or throat tightness
  • In extreme cases, anaphylaxis, which is life-threatening and requires emergency medical help

If you or someone in your household experiences any of these symptoms after eating the product, call 911 immediately.

The FDA urges shoppers to check their shelves and freezers, especially if they’ve purchased bread recently from Walmart or Kroger. If the product matches the description and codes above, dispose of it or bring it back to the store for a refund.
