A coalition of major defense contractors, including Airbus and MBDA, has formed “Team Gen 6” to actively lobby the German government to secure a concrete role and industrial workshare in the tri-national Future Combat Air System project.

A powerful coalition of European defense contractors has formally organized to lobby the German government regarding their potential role in the Future Combat Air System (FCAS). Representing a unified front, the alliance aims to ensure their combined technological expertise is deeply integrated into the continent’s most ambitious joint military aviation project.

Team Gen 6 outlines potential contributions

The newly formed group, identifying itself as “Team Gen 6,” includes prominent defense firms such as Airbus Defence and Space, Diehl Defence, Hensoldt, and MBDA. As reported by Defense News, a spokesperson for Hensoldt confirmed that the companies have drafted a joint paper specifically outlining their proposed contributions to the next-generation fighter jet project.

Industry insiders clarified that the coordinated effort is meant to secure deep involvement and manufacturing contracts within the existing initiative, rather than attempting to launch an entirely separate, competing fighter program.

Navigating complex international defense contracts

The FCAS program, spearheaded jointly by France, Germany, and Spain, is designed to replace current-generation fighters like the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale by the 2040s. Because the project is tri-national, securing industrial workshare is a highly political and fiercely competitive process among the participating nations’ domestic companies.

By banding together as Team Gen 6, these major contractors are signaling to Berlin that the local industrial base is fully equipped to handle critical subsystems, sensors, and armaments. The lobbying effort serves to urge the German government to aggressively advocate for their inclusion as the massive, multi-billion-euro defense contracts continue to be negotiated and awarded.
