Rail travel in Russia has become more dangerous lately. In the past year, several accidents have raised concerns, especially near the border with Ukraine.

Now, another tragic incident has taken place. This time, it ended with lives lost and dozens injured.

A railway bridge collapsed in the Bryansk region of Russia, killing at least seven people, according to El Economista.

Local authorities say almost 70 others were hurt. Among them are three children.

The governor of the region, Alexander Bogomaz, confirmed the numbers in a message.

He also shared that 44 people are still in the hospital. More than 20 have been treated and released.

The accident happened while a passenger train was passing through. It was traveling along the Klimov-Moscow route.

The collapse took place on a single-track section of the line, between the Pilshino and Vygonichi stations.

The governor later told state media that an explosion had caused the bridge to fall. He didn’t explain exactly what kind of blast it was.

Early reports say the bridge gave way while the train was underneath. Heavy debris came crashing down.

This damaged the front of the train and caused some of the cars to derail. At least three people, including a baby, are in serious condition.

Emergency services were quick to arrive. Sixteen ambulances rushed to the scene.

Medical teams are still working to treat the injured and move them to safety. Buses were also sent to carry people to temporary shelters.

Authorities say the rest of the train network is running as normal. Rescue teams have been sent to clear the area and repair the damage.

The transport prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation.

In a separate incident, a second bridge collapsed in the Kursk region. That one came down while a freight train was crossing it.

One of the drivers was hurt and taken to the hospital. Officials say part of the train caught fire, but crews managed to respond quickly.

These events are raising questions. People are wondering what’s going wrong with rail safety in these parts of Russia.
