Laughing it off
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was delivering a speech on Wednesday when his equipment suddenly died. Instead of pausing in awkward silence, he leaned right into the microphone.
He told the crowd exactly what had happened. Refusing to panic, Carney casually announced that his reading device had simply stopped working.
“I would now like to inform you that the teleprompter has ceased to function,” he told the audience, according to HuffPost.
He then delivered a perfectly timed punchline aimed directly at the White House. He joked, “Unlike a certain world leader, I do not view this as a conspiracy.”
Three sinister events
The audience immediately caught the reference and erupted into laughter. Carney was taking a direct shot at Donald Trump, who famously suffered a massive meltdown last year.
During a trip to the United Nations, the American president dealt with a broken escalator, bad audio, and a dead screen. Trump reacted furiously.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump declared that the technical problems were actually targeted attacks.
“Not one, not two, but three very sinister events!” Trump wrote online. “This wasn’t a coincidence, this was triple sabotage at the UN. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.”
A bitter rivalry
The joke highlights a rapidly deteriorating relationship between the two neighbouring nations. Canada historically served as a vital American ally, but the current administration has drastically shifted that dynamic.
Trump recently sparked a massive trade dispute by slapping a heavy tariff on Canadian imports. He even threatened retaliation after smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted into American airspace.
The president regularly hurls insults at the Canadian government. Just this Wednesday, Trump complained to the press that Canadian leaders were awful.
“Canada’s nasty, they are, they’re nasty,” Trump said, according to HuffPost. “I love the people, but they’re nasty. Nasty leadership.”
Pushing back hard
Trump also regularly mocks Carney by calling him the governor of America’s 51st state. The Canadian prime minister refuses to back down.
Carney has consistently challenged the aggressive rhetoric from Washington. During a recent summit in Davos, he received massive applause for telling middle-tier nations to boldly stand up to the United States.
