Yet when intense public attention meets a high-profile case, press conferences outside the courthouse can quickly derail into unexpected drama. A recent appearance outside a federal building turned heads after a defense attorney took a very unusual approach, reports HuffPost.
Taking to the steps
Legal drama reached a high point in Miami following a delayed court hearing. Outside the courthouse, defense attorney Joseph McBride gave a fiery speech regarding his clients, polarizing online figures Andrew and Tristan Tate. The brothers remain held in federal detention while contesting extradition to the United Kingdom on rape and sex trafficking charges.
McBride previously defended several January 6 Capitol riot suspects. He insisted that evidence supporting the brothers’ release from custody would be overwhelming and compelling. He then openly threatened political escalation if the presiding judge rules against his clients.
“And if we lose, and if this judge says ‘Look, despite the compelling arguments, despite what you’ve presented in front of me today, I’m still gonna rule against you,'” McBride said. “Then we will go straight to President Trump’s office; we will go straight to (Secretary of State) Marco Rubio’s office.”
Political appeals
The attorney pointed out that extraditing an American citizen ultimately requires the formal signature of the secretary of state. He then invoked American colonial history during a rant against British authorities.
“I understand we have a long and lasting relationship with the United Kingdom, but don’t forget that that relationship started when we took their tea and threw it into the damn water,” McBride said before calling the U.K. a “godforsaken country.”
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the lawyer’s remarks, according to HuffPost. British officials have until mid-September to submit supporting evidence for their extradition request to the State Department.
Both Tate brothers have repeatedly denied all criminal charges in all cases against them. According to reporting from ProPublica, US authorities previously lifted travel restrictions on the pair, allowing them to travel from Romania to Florida.
