U.S. President Donald Trump has embraced the potential reopening of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to resume direct negotiations with Kyiv. In a message posted late Saturday on Truth Social, Trump described the development as a “day of tremendous potential” that could mark a turning point in the ongoing war.
“A day of tremendous potential for Russia and Ukraine! Think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved if this endless ‘bloodbath’ finally, hopefully, ends,” Trump wrote on his social platform.
The comments came shortly after Putin announced his willingness to return to the negotiating table with Ukraine, offering May 15 in Istanbul as the proposed date and location for talks. The discussions, if confirmed, would mark the first direct talks between the two nations since negotiations broke down in 2022.
Trump emphasized that his administration remains committed to playing a constructive role in supporting peace efforts. “I will continue to work with both sides to make sure that happens,” the U.S. president said.

Trump also highlighted the importance of shifting global attention toward rebuilding and economic cooperation, outlining a future vision rooted in stability and mutual prosperity. “The US wants to focus instead on reconstruction and trade. Big week ahead!” he added.
Putin’s proposal comes in the wake of increasing international pressure. On Saturday, leaders from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland gathered in Kyiv alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to issue a unified call for a 30-day ceasefire beginning May 12. The ultimatum, backed by the White House, urged the Kremlin to end hostilities and reengage in dialogue or face the prospect of further sanctions.
While it remains to be seen whether Ukraine will agree to the proposed talks, or whether they will yield substantive outcomes, Trump’s comments suggest a renewed diplomatic push from Washington as both sides face mounting pressure to end the years-long conflict.
