Russian forces used the reduced visibility on Friday to assemble a pontoon bridge over the Vovcha River in southern Ukraine CNN reported.

They reportedly moved at least 10 vehicles across before spreading them through the nearby town of Dachne.

“The fog is very dense, and enemy forces continue to accumulate,” Ukrainian soldier Stanislav Buniatov said on Telegram.

Drone limitations

In the Donetsk region, CNN wrote that the same weather has frustrated drone crews on both sides near Pokrovsk.

A Ukrainian soldier in the area described the conditions succinctly, saying, “It’s good to move in the fog because it’s harder for drones to hit you, but it’s also hard for us, and everything turns into a kind of backgammon game on this land.”

Hotnews reports that the fog has recently enabled a Ukrainian assault regiment to conduct limited raids near Pokrovsk, including crossings of railway lines held by Russian forces.

Military analyst Michael Kofman, who recently visited Ukraine, noted the broader implications, writing on X that “Fog, wind, and rain significantly degrade drone operations, allowing Russian infiltration through Ukrainian positions.”

Southern advances

Russian troops also benefited from the weather in the Zaporizhzhia region. In a statement on Saturday, Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed the capture of Yablukove and two nearby settlements, crediting the fog with easing their advance, Hotnews notes.

Ukraine’s military, meanwhile, reported what it described as heavy assaults and significant artillery strikes by Russian forces across parts of Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk.

The Ukrainian side stated there were nearly 40 clashes in the past day, estimating “enemy losses amounted to nearly 300 people and 58 vehicles.”

Reporter’s note

Weather has increasingly become a decisive factor in Ukraine’s war, shaping everything from drone surveillance to troop movements.

As both armies rely more heavily on technology, conditions like fog underline the fragility of battlefield visibility and remind military planners how quickly environmental shifts can redefine tactical risks.
