As the war in Ukraine enters yet another tense phase, global powers are intensifying efforts to pressure Russia into halting its offensive. Germany, long a leading voice in Europe’s response to the conflict, has now issued a stark ultimatum to Moscow: agree to a ceasefire or face escalating consequences.
Germany’s Ceasefire Deadline
The German government announced on Monday that Russia must accept a ceasefire by midnight on May 12-13 or face a new round of sanctions. The announcement was made by government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, who was quoted by Digi24.
“The clock is ticking; we have 12 hours left of this day,” Kornelius stated, emphasizing that Berlin is coordinating with its European partners on the sanctions package.
Background of the Standoff
The ultimatum followed Russia’s rejection of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s offer of a 30-day ceasefire. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow’s stance, stating that “without resolving all nuances, this is impossible.”

President Vladimir Putin had earlier declared a unilateral temporary ceasefire from May 8 to 10, coinciding with Russia’s commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, marking the end of World War II. However, no lasting agreement was reached.
High Stakes for Upcoming Talks
President Zelensky remains firm, declaring that he is ready to meet Putin personally in Turkey on Thursday to negotiate an end to the hostilities. The next 24 hours are expected to be critical as international pressure mounts and diplomatic efforts intensify.
