Republican Congressman Don Bacon delivered a sharp critique of President Donald Trump
When military conflicts stretch out, political unity usually starts to crack.
Leaders often find themselves fighting an overseas war while battling critics at home. That dynamic is now playing out loudly on television.
He overpromised
Republican Congressman Don Bacon delivered a sharp critique of President Donald Trump during a recent television broadcast. Speaking on CNN cited by Mediaite, the lawmaker pointed to serious flaws in how the White House manages the Iran conflict.
The core issue involves political strategy. According to Bacon, the president made a major error by shutting out opposition lawmakers when the fighting broke out.
“The problem, I think, with the president early in this fight, he overpromised it’s going to be a quick fight,” Bacon told CNN. “And then he tried to go it alone without trying to bring in Democrats or trying to involve Congress and you can’t fight a war in a partisan manner.”
A lonely fight
The congressman noted that these decisions left the administration deeply isolated. With public support dropping, the White House now struggles to find allies in Washington.
“He’s sort of put us in a spot where he’s backed into a corner with this being an unpopular war,” Bacon explained. “He had to have this be a bipartisan effort, not a one-man band. That’s what it became.”
Despite his political frustration, the lawmaker does support the actual military tactics. He specifically praised the naval blockade restricting movement in the Strait of Hormuz.
“I think this is a better strategy than what we have had,” Bacon said on CNN. “The blockade is probably the easier thing for us to enforce. Right now we’ve been able to choke almost all the traffic going in and out of Iran. That’s good.”
Too many voices
Beyond congressional relations, Bacon highlighted another glaring issue. He argued that officials need to stop confusing the public with mixed signals.
This advice follows a public clash between the president and his own senior advisor. One day after Jared Kushner claimed diplomatic negotiations with Iran were actively happening, Trump completely denied it.
“There are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the president wrote on Truth Social.
For Bacon, the solution to this communication chaos requires strict discipline. “I also recommend, say less,” he told host Jake Tapper. “There should be fewer people talking on this because there’s contradictory messages going out there. Speak softly, but carry a big stick.”
