Several serious conditions can cause this type of physical symptoms.

Standing in front of a live microphone night after night is exhausting work for anyone.

In modern politics, where smartphones and cameras record every single second, even the smallest slip on stage quickly travels around the world.

Lately, a series of brief, unexpected moments at major rallies has viewers looking much closer at the podium.

Strange sounds on stage

As reported by the Irish Star, President Donald Trump has been keeping a packed schedule with nearly nightly campaign rallies across the United States.

That heavy travel load has brought intense public scrutiny, with online critics clipping and sharing several odd vocal sounds from his recent speeches.

One notable incident happened in Iowa while the president warned the audience about the opposition winning the Senate.

“If you don’t want communists controlling the US Senate, which is between JAIT — how about the gentleman from a place called Michigan, he’s in the — jihadist,” Trump told the crowd, before adding, “He’s a jihadist!”

Just a day earlier, according to the Irish Star, a similar moment played out during a rally for struggling Republican candidates in South Carolina.

“You know, here’s the lieutenant governor, and you know, I’d say 90 percent of the reason I took the governor — EUGH — I took the governor and I put her over at the United Nations,” Trump said. In both states, as well as after a separate slurping sound during a Tuesday speech in Texas, he simply kept talking without pausing.

What the expert sees

Critics have labeled these brief vocal slips as “glitches” and questioned whether they point to declining health. Speaking with the Daily Beast, forensic psychologist Dr. John Paul Garrison offered a clinical perspective on the viral clips.

“These types of unusual behaviors are expected when someone is experiencing a neurodegenerative disease or when they are having neurological dysfunction,” Garrison told the outlet. A neurodegenerative disease is a medical condition where nerve cells in the brain or body slowly lose function over time.

Beyond the vocal noises, Garrison pointed out what he described as a slight twitch in the president’s right arm, suggesting it could signal growing physical discomfort. “As you can see, President Trump seems to have a distinct spasm on one side,” the psychologist noted.

Growing health questions

He went on to name several serious conditions that can cause those types of physical symptoms. “What this could mean is this could be neurodegenerative disease. We could be talking Alzheimer’s, we could be talking Lewy body dementia, you could be talking something like Parkinson’s disease,” Garrison explained.

Online commenters cited by the Irish Star have also pointed to a condition known as Vocally Disruptive Behavior. Often seen in older adults with dementia, the symptom involves “‘chatterbox’ noise-making” as well as “noise-making which appears purposeless and persistent”.

Still, both Trump and the White House have repeatedly pushed back on health rumors, insisting his mind remains completely sharp. Age has stayed a central theme in American politics ever since Republicans targeted Joe Biden’s mental fitness before he left the 2024 race, followed by Trump becoming the oldest president ever sworn into office.
