A controversial proposal to print a new 250-dollar bill featuring Donald Trump has sparked a fierce political backlash, drawing sharp mockery from his former rival Hillary Clinton and stoking widespread debate over a century-old currency tradition.

A national currency serves as an enduring symbol of a country’s history and core values. In the United States, federal tradition has long dictated that only deceased individuals can be honored on paper money. However, a new legislative proposal to change that practice has sparked intense debate across the political spectrum, with critics questioning the motives behind the proposed redesign, reports The News Dailly.

A new design

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has joined critics opposing the new currency note. Reports indicate that administration officials have pressured the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to create the design.

According to The Washington Post, four employees spoke about the internal discussions anonymously due to concerns over professional retaliation. British painter Iain Alexander reportedly created a mock-up design for the currency.

Clinton shared her thoughts on the social media platform X, connecting the currency plan to economic issues. “By the end of Trump’s term, it’ll be just enough to buy one gallon of gas and a carton of eggs,” she wrote.

Changing the law

Current federal laws prohibit living individuals from appearing on US currency, a rule established in 1866. According to Britannica, the restriction was originally passed after a Treasury official named Spencer Clark placed his own image on a note.

Lawmakers have introduced new legislation to allow a special exception for the upcoming American semiquincentennial. The Treasury Department confirmed that preliminary preparations are underway in case the bill passes.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained the legal situation during a recent press conference. “As treasury secretary, I have two mandates for US currency at present: that no living person can be on US currency, and the currency must say ‘In God we trust’,” Bessent stated.

He added that the proposed legislation would modify the first requirement to allow the change. “So, right now, there is proposed legislation in front of the House, in front of the Senate, to change the first requirement, so that a living person – Donald J Trump – could be on the $250 bill,” he said.

Financial priorities

The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from several prominent Democrats. House Leader Hakeem Jeffries publicly dismissed the idea, telling the President to get over himself.

Senator Mark Warner also questioned the timing of the project during a period of economic pressure for families. He argued that official energy should focus on reducing daily living expenses instead.

“If this White House put even half as much energy into working to lower costs as it does into stoking the President’s ego, American families wouldn’t need that new $250 bill just to fill up their gas tanks,” Warner said in a statement.
