According to CBS News, officials say that the officer was attacked with a shovel before firing. DHS said two other people then emerged from a nearby apartment building and allegedly joined the confrontation.

“Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots,” the department said, adding that “both attackers are in custody”.

Protests return

The man who was shot was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while an ICE officer was also treated, DHS said. Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara said clashes followed near the scene, with officers hit by fireworks, ice and snowballs.
