Tensions in Minneapolis escalated again this week after a confrontation involving federal immigration officers left another person wounded. The incident comes amid heightened anger and protests across the city.
Officials offered competing accounts as demonstrators returned to the streets and city leaders warned the situation was spiralling.
Rising tensions
According to the US Department of Homeland Security, federal officers were carrying out a “targeted traffic stop” on Wednesday when a Venezuelan national was shot in the leg.
DHS said the man resisted arrest and assaulted an ICE officer.

According to CBS News, officials say that the officer was attacked with a shovel before firing. DHS said two other people then emerged from a nearby apartment building and allegedly joined the confrontation.
“Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots,” the department said, adding that “both attackers are in custody”.

Protests return
The man who was shot was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while an ICE officer was also treated, DHS said. Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara said clashes followed near the scene, with officers hit by fireworks, ice and snowballs.

City officials appealed for calm. “We understand there is anger. We ask the public to remain calm,” Minneapolis authorities said on X, again calling for ICE to leave the city and state.

About 3,000 federal officers have been deployed to the state in recent weeks.
The fatal shooting last week
Unrest has simmered since an ICE agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on 7 January.
