The debate over US foreign policy priorities spilled into public view this week after sharp comments from a senior White House adviser sparked rare criticism from within the Republican Party.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Advisor, Stephen Miller, said in an interview with CNN, that Greenland should “obviously be a part of the U.S.”, questioning Denmarks internationally recognized control over Greenland.

But according to a Republican Senator, Miller’s comments should put the official’s job in jeopardy,

Growing GOP unease

Speaking to CNN, Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina sharply criticized Stephen Miller during an interview Wednesday, suggesting the senior White House adviser’s position should be reviewed after comments about US control of Greenland.

“Look either Stephen Miller needs to get into a lane where he knows what he’s talking about or get out of this job,” Tillis told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead.”

Tillis, who is retiring and has served since 2018 as the top Republican on the bipartisan Senate NATO Observer Group, framed the dispute as more than a messaging error, warning of wider political consequences.

Senate floor anger

Hours earlier, Tillis delivered a forceful speech in the Senate, criticizing the administration’s handling of the issue. “I’m sick of stupid,” he said, calling the Greenland remarks “a distraction from the good work” of the president and adding that “the amateurs who said it was a good idea should lose their jobs.”

The senator also accused Miller’s CNN interview of being “horrible execution” and “unacceptable,” later calling the claim that Greenland should belong to the US “absurd.”

U.S.-Denmark meeting coming

Following Miller’s remarks, Denmark and Greenland reached out to the U.S. to get a meeting planned.

Yesterday, The Guardian and Washington Post reported that U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, told reporters, that he will “be meeting with them next week”. It is unclear, if he was referring to both Danish and Greenlandic officials or just Danish ones.
