The past week has set the stage for a high-stakes diplomatic crisis between the U.S., Greenland and Denmark, after Donald Trump revived his desire to make Greenland part of the U.S..
On Mondaym White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Advisor, Stephen Miller, said in an interview with CNN, that Greenland should “obviously be a part of the U.S.”, questioning Denmarks internationally recognized control over Greenland.
A couple of days later, U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, told reporters, that he will be meeting with Denmark and Greenland next week, the Danish ambassador in the U.S., Jesper Møller Sørensen, and a representative from Greenland are having meeting after meeting with U.S. Officials these days.
But yesterday, Donald Trump added new fuel to the already raging diplomatic fire.
NATO or Greenland
In an interview with The New York Times, the POTUS said that, “it may be a choice” between keeping NATO intact and taking control of Greenland., when asked what of the two options was the most important to him.

The U.S. already has a wide range of options regarding military presence on the world’s largest island, but to Trump, ownership seems to be key.
“I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can’t do with, you’re talking about a lease or a treaty. Ownership gives you things and elements that you can’t get from just signing a document,” he said.
“I don’t need international law”
International law states that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but Trump told the Times, that he does answer to international law.
Instead, he said, it is his own morality and his own mind, that are the only things that can stop him, as he put it.
Earlier this week, Trump posted on Truth Social, that NATO would be there for the U.S., the States needed assistance. He added that, “we will always be there for NATO”.
