International alliances are often built on public handshakes and carefully staged smiles.
Yet behind the scenes, personal relationships between world leaders can quickly disintegrate into bitter, public feuds. A sudden social media clash between two major Western figures has laid bare how fast old friendships can turn toxic, reports ANSA.
A bitter fallout
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is choosing silence after the latest verbal attack from across the Atlantic. According to Ansa, a growing dispute erupted after US President Donald Trump claimed that Meloni had “begged” him for a photograph at a recent G7 summit.
The Italian leader quickly fired back, calling the story completely fabricated. The row escalated over the weekend when Trump doubled down on his claims on his Truth Social platform. He suggested Meloni only wanted to patch things up to boost her own popularity.
The two leaders were once seen as close political allies. However, Italy’s recent refusal to support the United States during the war in Iran deeply angered the American president. That geopolitical divide has now triggered a highly personal social media war.
None of his business
Meloni did not hold back in her initial response on Instagram. She openly labeled Trump’s public tirades as “senseless” and dismissed any idea that her political standing relied on his approval.
She made it clear that her popularity was none of his business. The Italian premier also stated that she had no intention of commenting further on the petty back and forth.
But Trump refused to let the matter drop so easily. On Sunday, he launched another attack on Truth Social, targeting Italy’s military commitments and its broader stance on global security.
Testing the alliance
In his latest online post, Trump criticized Italy for failing to confront international threats. Ansa reported that Trump targeted both the nation and its leader directly over their foreign policy choices.
“After spending Trillions of Dollars on NATO, Italy, and its Prime Minister, wouldn’t even think of becoming involved with the Islamic Republic of Iran and their very serious Nuclear Threat,” Trump wrote.
He then complained about the lack of support from European allies when conflict actually breaks out. “For decades, we defend them but, when tested, they are not there to defend us, and the rest of the World. Not good!” he added.
So far, Meloni has ignored the president’s latest angry remarks. Her team has kept quiet, leaving the future of the once-strong relationship up in the air.
