A widespread cyclospora outbreak linked to imported Mexican lettuce has infected thousands across the US and caused two deaths in Michigan.
Two people in Michigan have died following a widespread outbreak of cyclospora, according to state health authorities, the BBC reports.
The parasitic bug moves through contaminated food or water and triggers severe stomach illness.
Officials noted that both individuals suffered from “significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration.”
45 states affected
The parasite has already reached 45 states, based on tracking by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Federal records reveal nearly 7,000 confirmed laboratory cases nationwide, making it a major public health event.
Even so, federal agencies stress that deaths from the bug remain uncommon. The CDC pointed out that the intestinal sickness is “not usually life-threatening.”
Michigan sits at the epicenter of the surge. Local health records show more than 11,000 cases and nearly 200 hospital visits, though many infections lack laboratory confirmation, according to the BBC.
Tainted salad greens
Investigators linked the sweeping infection to shredded iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico.
Processing giant Taylor Farms supplied the affected greens to prominent restaurant chains throughout the United States.
In response to the health risks, Taylor Farms initiated a voluntary recall of its central Mexican crop.
Major clients took immediate action, with Taco Bell dropping the supplier’s lettuce from its restaurants nationwide, the BBC reports.
How to protect yourself from infection
The warm-weather parasite transfers to humans through fecal contamination. Past outbreaks occurred when farm fields were irrigated using dirty water supplies.
Thoroughly rinsing fruits and vegetables under a tap is a standard precaution, though it cannot guarantee total removal of the microscopic bug.
Heat remains the most effective defense, as thoroughly cooking produce to 70°C or higher neutralizes the threat, according to the BBC.
