Princess Kate is preparing for her first overseas engagement since revealing her cancer is in remission, with a two-day visit to Italy focused on early childhood education and development.
The trip is expected to attract major public attention as the Princess of Wales gradually resumes a more prominent international role following her treatment and recovery.
Focus on children
NBC News reported that Kate will travel to Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, a city internationally recognised for its child-focused education model.
The visit forms part of what Kensington Palace described as a global “fact-finding mission” examining approaches to supporting young children and families.
Officials said the princess wants to explore how different countries approach early years education and child development.
An aide told NBC News that Kate was “energised” and “excited” to see the Reggio Emilia system in practice and meet educators working within it.
“This is a huge moment for the princess,” the aide said, describing the visit as a significant step following her recovery.
Signature campaign
Early childhood development has become one of Kate’s central public causes in recent years.
The Princess of Wales launched the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood in 2021 to raise awareness about the importance of development during a child’s first five years.
The Reggio Emilia philosophy emphasises creativity, relationships and the idea that children learn through multiple forms of expression and interaction.
Kensington Palace said the visit would also highlight the importance of supportive environments and healthy relationships in shaping children’s futures.
Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty Magazine, told NBC News the trip reinforced Kate’s commitment to making early years education a defining issue of her public work.
Life after treatment
Kate, now 44, publicly revealed her cancer diagnosis in 2024 before later announcing she had completed chemotherapy and entered remission.
Her updates on treatment marked a notable shift in royal communications, with the princess speaking openly about her health through social media and public appearances.
When announcing her remission earlier this year, she visited cancer patients at London’s Royal Marsden Hospital, where she had received care.
“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery,” she wrote at the time.
Experts say her continued focus on early childhood issues could help draw wider attention to challenges facing education and childcare systems in Britain and beyond.
